Violent criminals don’t take days off.  Not Sundays.  Not Mondays.

It doesn’t matter if you’re at Illinois Wesleyan University campus in Bloomington, or in Chicago, violence happens.  Even early on a Monday evening.

The best thing one can do to avoid criminal attack is maintain situational awareness and use common sense.  Translation:  Don’t have your phone out while you’re walking in public and don’t do stupid things with or to stupid people.

Most folks move through life believing they are in “safe” places unless they make a wrong turn and end up in “the ghetto”.

Unfortunately, bad guys aren’t just in “bad neighborhoods”.  They are everywhere, even bucolic college campuses.

Bloomington Police seek attacker following robbery attempt

BLOOMINGTON (WJBC) – Bloomington Police say a woman was hospitalized after she was injured in a strong-arm robbery on Monday night.

Police say a man attacked the 21-year-old woman at about 9:30 p.m. at the corner Empire and McLean streets near the Illinois Wesleyan University campus.

The woman described the attacker as a six-foot-tall black male in his 20s with dark skin, short black hair and an upper tooth missing. He fled on foot after trying to take her cell phone and a scuffle ensued.

And then there’s Chicago.

Two killed and three, including infant, hurt in Chicago shooting

(MSN) – Two women were killed and two men and an infant were wounded in a shooting on Monday night in Chicago, police said.

The 11-month old’s mother and grandmother were killed when an unknown number of people inside a car opened fire on the group around 7:30 p.m., Chicago police deputy chief Eugene Roy told reporters.

The women were both pronounced dead at hospital. Roy said the men, both in their 20s, were rushed to hospital where one was in critical condition and undergoing surgery and the other was in good condition.

The infant was in stable condition.

“We have an innocent family coming home from a family outing,” Roy said, according to a recording of the news conference aired by broadcaster WGN-TV.
