Florida’s sheriff’s are getting with the program when it comes to an open carry law that seems sure to pass the Sunshine State.  Well, except for Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, pictured above.

Florida Police Chiefs Will Back Revised Open-Carry Bill

(WLRN) – Acknowledging “momentum” behind a proposal that would allow people with concealed-weapons licenses to openly carry guns, the Florida Police Chiefs Association said Thursday its board of directors had voted to back the controversial measure — as long as changes designed to protect law-enforcement officers are included.

But there’s some Garry McCarthy-type predictions coming from some of the sheriffs.

If the measure passes, 1.45 million Floridians with concealed-weapons permits would be able to openly carry guns. Opponents — including a number of Florida sheriffs — warn that people who openly display guns could get hurt as a result, either by criminals or law enforcement.

…Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, a staunch opponent of open carry, said the four amendments wouldn’t make the bill acceptable to him — or safe for people who openly display their guns.

For instance, he said, if an officer arrives at the scene of a crime and sees someone with a weapon, “At a minimum, they’re going to be thrown down on the ground with a gun pointed at them — or worse.”

And if good citizen with a concealed weapon walks into, say, a bank during an armed robbery, Gualtieri added, “he’s going to take one in the chest because he’s a threat.”

Our question:  Does Sheriff Shit for Brains plan to do the same for plainclothes police officers who might be open carrying?

    1. Its a matter of training and police procedures as well as judgment.
Police will need training to understand that someone openly carrying a gun is behaving in a normal, legal manner.
Personally, I think the advantages of concealed carry exceed those of open carry.

  1. I agree with Dragan i’m for those who want to live out there right to be able to do so, but for me I don’t want to look like a pitbull just a sheepdog.

  2. Sheriff “Shit for Brains” should ask his law enforcement counterparts in other states that have had open carry for years. How many citizens have been killed in those states for having a gun on their belt? Yes, right. No need to ask, we know the answer.

I hope his deputies have better judgement than this anti-civil rights politician.
