NRA-ILA contract lobbyist Todd Vandermyde, the head of pro-gun forces in Illinois, released a couple of updates in recent days about what’s happening in Springfield of late.
In short, the gun-grabbers spent this past weekend not enjoying the beautiful weather with their families, but instead in smoky back rooms trying to re-write their gun dealer licensing scheme into a new amendment.
Gabby Giffords’ “Americans for Responsible Solutions” snake-oil sellers have gotten nowhere with their opening gambit that basically was a leftist wish-list to inflict California- (or Massachusetts-… or New York-) style gun control on the whole state of Illinois.
The ARS clown car found that downstate Democrats, in most cases, had zero interest in this new scheme.
So now, they’re “moderating” their proposals and seeking the support of suburban Republicans who have been stuck taking a number of tough votes to back the Republican governor.
While the newest bill has yet to be introduced. Sympathetic “informers” haven’t sent us any drafts yet – and who knows, it might not have been finished yet.
They are facing a critical upcoming deadline, so there is some urgency.
Todd’s recommendation: “If you have a suburban republican legislator, I would urge you to call them and express your opposition no matter how strong they have been in the past.”
While they are currently courting suburban Republicans, they may start courting some downstate Democrats soon as well.
So, in a nutshell, call your state Senator and Representative and make sure your opposition to any gun dealer licensing bill and the onerous provisions – including gun rationing – contained therein.
Let’s give this scheme an anchor shot and put it out of its misery for good.
There’s also some talk about Senate Bill 553, Amendment 2.
It looks as though that one will – at worst – die in the House because of deadlines.
Todd also notes that, “It wouldn’t surprise me if they think they can find the votes that at some point they find a senate bill to use to get around the rules”.
Imagine that? “Getting around the rules” to pass a nefarious gun control bill.
Who would have thought Mark Kelly would be up for that.
