Wow.  Gun sales are setting records left and right for 15+ months, and this CBS News station just now figures out that it might be smart reporting to cover the fact that women are the largest growing segment of gun owners in America?

Welcome to 2008.

Women are Fastest Growing Group of Gun Owners in America

(CBSNews Milwaukee) – You might call it girl power. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, women are the fastest-growing group of gun owners in the U.S.

Typically their weapon of choice is a semi-automatic handgun — lightweight, accurate, and so simple that practically anyone can learn to use it.

In states that allow it, a handgun has for some become the must-have accessory.

Pamela Riden told correspondent Tracy Smith she carries a gun for personal protection: “Makes me feel secure.”

“I’ve got two kids,” said Colleen Krehbiel. “And I just wanted to have something that would keep me safer.” She wears her weapon in a holster on her hip.

“I just feel safer having it with me,” said Laura Bowman, who carries her weapon in the front pocket of her purse.

Amy McCrabb has a gun that’s pink. (“It is pink, I’m a girl!” she laughed.)

Turns out most prefer basic black. And since more women than ever are taking up arms, there are gun stores that cater to women, like She’s A Pistol in Shawnee, Kansas.

Women and young people are buying guns like never before.  Gun sales are booming, thanks in part to uncertainty in the world, soft-on-crime prosecutors not imprisoning bad people, and gun grabbers prattling on about plans to ban guns instead of criminals and terrorists.

  1. I’m fresh out of women to bring into the gun-owner club in my family.

My neighbor “girls” (both young and not-so-much) are all gun owners as well, and have been for years. The latest all got theirs about the time Obama got his promotion to the White House. I volunteer to take them and Mrs. W. to the range and we all have fun. If you’re a “misguided” youth and you come to these parts looking to victimize these nice ladies, you can expect a short and hard life.

  2. I urge every reader to invite a non gun person to come to the range once per year. Make it fun and light and fairly brief, with lunch or coffee afterward.
You’d be surprised how many people enjoy shooting when introduced to it correctly.
If everyone got one new shooter into the sport, we double our numbers.

  3. Two of my sisters, age 68 and 66 just bought their first hand gun, they’ve had some training and have their FOID cards, they love to go shooting, and are getting a conceal carry license. When I asked them why, they said they wanted to go places and not be afraid to do so. Like their brother, they love FREEDOM.
