The difference in how police see a bad guy at a crime scene will hinge on the evidence found.  If there is no gun found, he'll be portrayed like the photo on the left.  If police find all the evidence, he *might be* viewed as the picture above on the right.

We teach our students to point out evidence to responding police officers after a deadly force encounter because sometimes it can disappear.  Wind can blow cartridge cases, or they can get stuck in the treads of boots worn by first responders.  Witnesses can sometimes want to take home souvenirs.  Or people or co-conspirators can simply steal valuable items…  like guns.

In Chicago, the dubious distinction of the first homicides (and first double-homicide) in the Windy City Sunday morning.  As an aside, that didn't take long…  mere hours after ringing in the New Year!

Chicago (Sun-Times) – Two men shot to death Sunday morning in the North Side Uptown neighborhood were the first two reported homicides of 2017 in Chicago, after a bloody 2016 saw 780 homicides in the city.

The two men were shooting at each other about 4:25 a.m. inside of a business in the 4600 block of North Broadway, according to Chicago Police.

Maurice Delaney, 38, of the 9000 block of Skokie Boulevard in Skokie, was shot in the chest and right leg, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Ali Mohamed, 31, of the 6400 block of North Oakley, was shot multiple times in his right side.

Both men were taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead at 5:19 a.m., authorities said.

Now, The Second City Cop brings us this:

Walking Guns

An amusing bit of information coming in from the scene of 019's double fatal shooting:
  • Despite there being spent brass all over the place from  extensive use of both weapons, no gun was located on or near either individual. It seems a concerned citizen walked up on the carnage, pocketed both guns, and disappeared into the night.
That is typical Chicago. And it points to the fact that "guns walk" away from crime scenes by means of other offenders, accomplices or someone just out looking for an opportunity for something to steal.

And this happens at shootings where someone points a gun at the police and then passes the gun along when he ducks out of sight. Or it gets picked up by some third party when pitched by an offender. Opportunities abound for mischief….we're just saying.

Just keep this in mind if you find yourself in a situation where you just perforated a gunman.  He may quickly become an "unarmed" "victim" if someone steals his heater before police can log it.

  1. You can find all the evidence and be perfectly justified… and the media and the shitbird's family will still portray the raping, drug-smoking, drug-dealing, murdering, robbing, gun-toting thug as a saintly prince in photos and recollections.
