Good Samaritan Thomas Yoxall

Guns save lives.  That happened on January 12th on a desolate stretch of I-10 in Arizona.  A Good Samaritan who saved a wounded Arizona State Trooper has come forward publicly at an Arizona DPS news conference.   While Thomas Yoxall, 43, doesn’t consider himself a hero, Arizona’s Department of Public Safety thinks otherwise.  They honored him for his courage in saving Trooper Edward Andersson.  Mr. Yoxall used his handgun to rescue the injured trooper under attack.

During the news conference, ears perked up when Yoxall revealed his “past”: a felony theft conviction from 2000.  Ordinarily, a felony conviction stands as a lifetime prohibition on legal gun ownership.  Thankfully for the wounded trooper, Yoxall had his gun rights restored in 2003.

Arizona Reformed Felon

On that early January morning, Mr. Yoxall had a handgun in the console of his car when he saw a trooper under attack.  When the trooper’s attacker failed to heed commands to stop, Mr. Yoxall carefully lined up and fired twice.  His shots struck the trooper’s assailant, an “undocumented immigrant” beating the trooper’s head against the pavement.  Those rounds ended the attack – initially.

Yoxall offered a rather interesting description of what happened, as reported by the Phoenix New-Times:

“I noticed the suspect on top of Trooper Andersson, beating him in a savage way,” Yoxall said. “I immediately pulled over. My commands were ignored by the suspect as [Andersson] called out for help. And I alleviated the threat to him.”

While rendering aid to the trooper, the wounded attacker charged Yoxall and the trooper one more time.  Seeing no other option, Yoxall shot the former Mexican federale in the melon, permanently “alleviating” the threat to them both.

Not everyone believes in gun rights restoration for convicted felons.  In those states with a gun rights restoration process, the procedures and requirements vary to complete the process.   Thankfully, Mr. Yoxall got his rights restored.

Let’s face it:  The People of the Gun are good guys and gals.  Thomas Yoxall, reformed felon and law-abiding gun owner, did what no gun control advocate could ever do to rescue a police officer from death or great bodily injury.  He pulled his legally owned firearm, interceded to save innocent life while risking his own, then providing aid to the injured trooper.

He's not only repaid his debt to society "bigly" to quote the big guy in the White House, but with interest as well!

Here’s more from the Phoenix New-Times:

“My primary concern was the life and wellness of Trooper Andersson, first and foremost,” he said. “There was no choice. I had no opportunity to even think about it rationally. I responded in the only way I know how to respond.”

He said the incident had a strong impact on him, Andersson, and their families.

Even though he may have saved Andersson’s life, he pointed out, he still took someone else’s life.

“It’s difficult to reconcile,” he said.

He keeps replaying the scene in his mind, he said, and “it hurts.”

Not that he would change a thing.

“Doing the right thing sometimes has a price, and sometimes that price is severe,” he said. “I wouldn’t change it because another man gets to go home to his family. I would not hesitate to respond in exactly the same fashion.”

…Milstead, also at the Wednesday news conference, said he’s very humbled to know Yoxall, “because we’re having this conversation about a hero and not a line-of-duty death.”

Andersson, he said, lost part of a bone in his surgeries and is still recovering.

Yoxall didn’t go into detail about his past, but said his moments of poor judgment nearly 20 years ago “have not dictated my future, nor are they representative of the person I am today.”

  1. Train daily in martial arts and firearms combat. May the trooper recover. May Mr. Yoxall continue his good path and not be overburdened by his necessary actions. May the Mexican … meh.

  2. I remember an article in the GSL newspaper last year about an Illinois resident who committed several felonies as a youth and after turning his life around and much trial and tribulation he finally earned back his gun rights and got his FOID card….if I recall he also has a concealled carry license and is currently a firearms instructor as well…..correct me if I am wrong.

  3. Once upon a time there was a man named Saul of Tarsus that had his rights restored and became a new transformed man the Apostle Paul, the rest is recorded in history.

  4.

Prior to the 1968 GCA and the FOID card law non-violent felons could keep and bear arms. Prior to the 1934 NFA any one that committed any felony but did their time and paid their debt to society was allowed to keep and bear arms.

What caused these outrageous changes in the law; Anti-American, Anti-gun Democrats/Bolsheviks  pushed for stricter gun control measures as a way to deter crime and it was pro-gun groups that supported and even helped write these horrible laws of citizen disarmament.

Today we are experiencing massive social unrest because (you guessed it) anti-American, anti-gun Democrats/Bolsheviks are wanting to continue their goal of destroying our nation. This time we don’t need pro-gun groups helping them.

Please remember we used to be able to buy guns through the mail without background checks or 4473 forms, yet crime was low. Prior to all of these disbarment laws Chicago had approximately 200 gun shops selling guns including mail order sales.  At the same time the crime rate in Chicago was 1/3 of what it is today.

We have got to stop compromising making concessions and appeasement.

    1. Stop compromising?

What happens if we have a choice between compromise and getting steamrolled, Bill1?  I hope we choose compromise.
