One of our GSL family suffered a home invasion late last week near Pontiac, IL. The victim, a retired police officer, and his family escaped serious injury in the Thursday morning attack. Rumor has it that the officer was targeted, possibly for his firearms. Intruders forced their way in at oh-dark-thirty.
Police have made an arrest of one of the suspects. He's held in jail without bond.
Carry at home.
Given the early hour of the break-in, it would be understandable if the homeowner GSL member did not have his gun on. However, if you are not in bed, then consider carrying while you're at home. If someone throws a brick through a sliding glass door or worse yet, comes in an unlocked door, you can bid them a proper welcome in just a couple of seconds. Without a gun on you, you're just reacting instead of attacking in a home invasion.
And the first five seconds are more important than the first five minutes. Which are more important than the next five hours. Or, as some military professional once said, a fair plan implemented executed with extreme violence immediately beats a perfect plan implemented hours later.
Carry at home? Isn't it uncomfortable?
If you've selected a holster that fits comfortably, and wear it in a sturdy belt, you'll not even notice the gun on your belt. My personal litmus test for carry rigs: Can I take a nap while laying on the side where the holster's located? If it doesn't bind, pinch, or cause discomfort, then that's good. If I don't even notice the holster, then that's great. For me, the Blade-tech Nano fits the bill very well. It secures the gun, fits extremely comfortably and stays put. Even better, I bought the model that fits a Glock 17, so my everyday Glock 19 fits perfectly in it, as does the 26.
I've got other rigs that wear as comfortably, but don't wear them everyday. Life's too short for an ill-fitting holster (or a crappy trigger).
For me, taking the rig off is much more of a pain than leaving it on when I'm at home. At night, I leave the gun and rig on my pants so if something goes bump in the night (or the smoke detector goes off), I can put my pants on. Instantly, I have my gun, light, wallet, keys, reloads, and everything else in a matter of moments. Grab the phone and I can be out of the house in seconds, or in the basement in event of a tornado. If the situation warrants it, I can greet a home invader properly in seconds. You can too with proper planning.
Anyway, we're thankful our member and his family came out of this home invasion attack pretty much unharmed.

PONTIAC — One person was arrested following a residential burglary in rural Pontiac on Thursday morning. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a call of a possible home invasion on South Countryside Lane around 4:30 AM. Following an investigation, a person involved was arrested and charged with residential burglary and criminal damage to property, which officials say exceeded $8,000. The name of the person is not being released at this time, but they are being held without bond. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests and charges are possible.
