Frequently, I hear the common refrain:  “Hey John.  When is Trump going to do something on guns?”

As a member of Trump’s Second Amendment Coalition team, I wish I could say Team Trump has a detailed plan for rolling back decades of onerous gun control.

I’ve said for months now that Obstacle #1 to expanding gun rights and rolling back gun control in a meaningful way is House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate President Mitch McConnell.  These two men, so-called Republican leaders, stand solidly with Michael Bloomberg and George Soros when it comes to gun control.  While they talk a good game at election time, neither could give a damn about your gun rights.  Their mission, first and foremost, is to protect and defend the ruling class in Washington.

It’s not just guns.  Team Trump has thus far run into a wall (pun intended) in Ryan and McConnell at every turn.  The long-promised repeal of Obamacare failed under Ryan’s miserable “leadership”.  Funding for the wall, tax cuts and a host of other initiatives – including gun rights – have all languished under Ryan and McConnell.  Heck, Senator McConnell still hasn’t approved all of Trump’s nominations!

Before you shoot the messenger in disgust and mutter some four-letter words, I have good news for you.  Extensive behind the scenes work by key Trump people and their allies has begun yielding results.  Pressure on individual members has grown dramatically.  The burning sensation on the feet of House and Senate leaders – including, but not limited to, Ryan and McConnell, has grown dramatically.  Trump and his allies will move on gun rights and other key issues before the end of this year, despite the intransigence of Ryan and McConnell.

Last time I checked, we stand at 212 co-sponsors of National Reciprocity.  That’s six shy of a straight up majority.  It’s going to get called this year and it’s going to pass the House.

The SHARE Act to remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act shows movement as well.  In fact, in some circles, key people believe it might even pass ahead of national reciprocity!

In a nutshell, I don’t know which will pass through the House first.  Both face tough sledding in the Senate if McConnell wishes to continue to play hardball against Trump.  Tonight's election in Alabama may prove the initiator to move this process along formally, especially if Luther Strange loses.  In fact, the greater the margin of loss for Strange, the greater the pressure on McConnell and other RINOs in both the House and Senate.  Time will tell if Trump can save McConnell from himself to secure the passage of both of these bills.

I’m putting my money on “In Trump We Trust”.  Don’t bet against The Donald.  He doesn’t ever play to lose.

    1. It will.  We believe we have the votes to pass it.  And if it's approved at the federal level, we ought to pick up another couple of votes to make it a lead-pipe cinch.  And Cullerton has promised us a vote on it (SB-50).

  1. Thanks for playing, John.   We appreciate the effort and hope you can accomplish the goal  sooner rather than later.
