Some years ago, during an upswing in riots somewhere in America, I read a piece from a guy who owned a store. His strategy if the mob came to loot his store was to take his 10/22 and shoot a couple of the first intruders in the upper legs. The sound of the shots plus the screams of the recipients of his shots would motivate the rest of the mob to go elsewhere. What’s more, the still somewhat mobile bad actors would hobble away, which made cleanup a lot easier. On top of that, the now-perforated rioters probably weren’t going to file a police report and say they were looting a store when they developed these leg wounds.
Not sure if that’s what happened at a Chicago smoke shop, but in this case, police were able to put things together after an 18-year-old aspiring smoker tried to force entry on the rear door of Big Lou’s Tobacco Shop. Cops found him not far away in the 4700 block of North Talman Ave., leaking from a pair of leg wounds.
CWB Chicago reports:
CHICAGO — A smoke shop employee shot a would-be burglar who tried to break into the Lincoln Park businesses after closing time on Sunday evening, officials said.
Chicago police officers who responded to calls of a person shot in the 4700 block of North Talman around 11:45 p.m. found an 18-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his legs. The man initially told officers that someone shot at him from a black car.
But officers said the man clammed up after police received another 911 call about a burglary attempt at a business in the 2600 block of West Lawrence. Police determined that a 40-year-old man inside the business shot the 18-year-old, who was trying to enter through the back door, according to a CPD media statement.
A CWBChicago reporter saw a bicycle lying in the alley behind Big Lou’s Tobacco Shop, 2617 West Lawrence, as police spoke with someone outside the store. The 18-year-old was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition with gunshot wounds to both legs. He is in police custody as detectives investigate the shooting, the CPD statement said.
Dementia Joe would be proud, if he’s cognizant enough.
Not a big fan of the shoot to wound theory, or not using enough gun for the task. If you are justified in the application of deadly force, you should shoot to terminate the attack. People can take that for what it is, but I will say I personally practice a lot of Mozambique drill (center mass / head) shots.
.22 better than none, a .22 in the femoral or maybe crotch?, would definitely be deterrent enough, however, like you I believe larger diameter holes will stop aggression quicker, unless of course, the perp is hopped up on drugs enough (s)he/it does not comprehend pain/shock/massive leaks of red bodily fluid and is intent on harming s/he/lit’s victim. (have to cover all “pronouns” these days). Situational awareness, always, wherever you are.
