The interwebz are all atwitter with news of a bill to establish “National Reciprocity” – in other words, to make states recognize concealed carry licenses just like they recognize driver’s licenses, marriage licenses and so forth.

Here’s the thing:  This is never going to happen and John Cornyn knows this.  This is, in my experienced opinion, just like the Republicans introducing a measure to repeal Obamacare years ago when they knew it would never pass both houses of Congress and get a presidential signature.  This is what the Establishment GOP does.  They posture like they’re going actually do what they campaigned on but when they get to Washington, they drink the water and decide they would rather be liked by the DC cocktail circuit more than their base back home.

From TownHall:

GOP Lawmakers Might Be Poised to Score a Major Second Amendment Victory

Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and John Kennedy (R-LA) introduced a bill that would allow those who possess concealed carry licenses in their states to carry firearms in all 50 states.

If passed, the bill could be a massive victory for Second Amendment rights, which have been under attack in blue states after the Supreme Court’s ruling in New York Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen.

Kennedy said the bill “would affirm Americans’ fundamental liberties while respecting every state’s right to make their own laws,” in a press release.

Cornyn noted that the proposed legislation “would reduce unnecessary burdens for law-abiding citizens and allow them to carry a concealed firearm in every state that permits it.”

Several other Republican lawmakers have cosponsored the measure.

The law aims to standardize concealed carry laws by ensuring that those who have gone through the process to obtain a license will not be prohibited from carrying their firearms in other states.

The legislation would bar states from imposing additional restrictions on non-residents who have a license that go further than laws that apply to residents.

Yeah, that’s a mighty big “MIGHT.”

No, the only way National Reciprocity happens is if it’s tossed into an omnibus bill that’s a must-pass.  Kind of like how we got the Lautenberg Amendment which, as an ex post facto law, barred gun ownership from anyone convicted of any domestic violence charge…  yes, even if it was a misdemeanor.

Dollars to donuts that House Speaker Johnson doesn’t have half as much testosterone as AOC and will just go through the motions on this bill knowing that the Dems will block it from a vote in the Senate.  Remember, under current “rules” bills need 60 votes to pass the Senate.  And assuming that Republicans can keep their entire caucus in support of National Reciprocity (and I have my doubts), they would still need seven pro-gun Dems to vote for it.  I can’t think of a single Dem Senator who would vote for this, much less seven.

And while Senator Kennedy is a pretty good guy, I wouldn’t urinate on John Cornyn if he was laying on the street on fire.
